Universal Works produce contemporary menswear inspired by everything from workwear and streetwear to tailoring and sportswear.
Founded in 2008 in Nottingham by David Keyte, the brand was inspired by a combination of his childhood growing up in a working class midlands family and his experiences working in the industry with legendary brands Paul Smith and Maharishi. Initially working exclusively from his kitchen table, the brand have come on some distance since, expanding into a number of trusted small scale factories through the developed world. It’s important to Universal Works that their business is built upon independent roots, employing only skilled craftsmen and women to create their products. The collections themselves generally consist of boxy, utilitarian garments in a variety of functional cuts and interesting fabrics; standout pieces always include the Bakers Jacket inspired by the type of chore coat David’s dad would wear, their regular tapered flat front chino the Aston Pant (one of our most popular trouser styles in store) and their lightweight trucker style overshirt the Uniform Shirt. There’s an air of consistency through each seasonal collection as the brand reintroduce familiar styles in new and unorthodox seasonal fabrics alongside a plethora of seasonal styles developed by the constantly innovative design team. It’s clear to see from the brands careful and constant expansion that they’re doing something right and as they move forward into new markets with their own brand of good, honest menswear the future seems bright for Universal Works.
